1. Purpose and Scope
1.1 Purpose.
This Code of Conduct (“Code”) sets standards of behaviour expected from all individuals and entities using the Monkstays Platform, including Guests, Hosts, and Organisational Users.
1.2 Mission Alignment.
Monkstays promotes respectful, safe, and contemplative hospitality experiences in Christian Catholic monasteries, convents, retreat houses, and other religious or spiritual institutions worldwide.
1.3 Scope.
This Code applies to all activity conducted on or through the Platform, and operates together with the applicable Terms of Service and Monkstays’ other policies.
2. Core Values
2.1 Respect.
All Users must treat others with dignity and courtesy, regardless of faith, culture, or background.
2.2 Integrity.
Users must act honestly and transparently in their communications, listings, and transactions.
2.3 Compliance.
Users must follow applicable laws, Monkstays’ Terms of Service, and this Code.
2.4 Peace and Contemplation.
Users commit to maintaining a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere consistent with religious and spiritual environments, while respecting the rights and dignity of others.
3. Conduct Applicable to All Users
3.1 Prohibited Behaviour.
The following is prohibited:
(a) harassment, discrimination, or hate speech;
(b) illegal activity, including use or promotion of illegal substances;
(c) violence, threats, or intimidation;
(d) damage, theft, or misuse of property;
(e) unauthorised commercial, political, or ideological activity where it disrupts the setting or violates host rules;
(f) false or misleading representations;
(g) sharing another person’s personal data without consent.
3.2 Privacy and Confidentiality.
Users must respect the privacy and confidentiality of information obtained through the Platform.
3.3 Health and Safety.
Users must comply with applicable health and safety requirements and promptly report hazards or incidents.
3.4 Cooperation.
Users shall cooperate in good faith with Monkstays’ review or investigation of potential violations.
4. Guest Conduct
4.1 Respect for Religious Settings.
Guests shall behave with reverence and decorum, including observing quiet hours, appropriate dress, and respectful language.
4.2 Prohibited Acts.
Guests shall not engage in:
(a) disorderly or disruptive behaviour;
(b) illegal drug use or excessive alcohol consumption (where alcohol is permitted at all);
(c) misuse or desecration of sacred or institutional property;
(d) conduct that undermines the environment’s contemplative purpose, including disruptive proselytising.
4.3 Community Harmony.
Guests must respect residents, staff, and local customs, and comply with house rules communicated by the Host.
4.4 Reporting.
Guests should promptly report safety issues, accidents, or serious conduct concerns to the Host and/or Monkstays.
4.5 Commitment Clause.
Each Guest agrees to help preserve the peaceful atmosphere of the host institution, ensuring their stay contributes to respect and mutual understanding.
5. Host Conduct
5.1 Institutional Criteria and equal Treatment.
Hosts shall welcome Guests without unlawful discrimination and uphold the dignity of every visitor.
Where applicable and permitted by law, Hosts may apply admission criteria that are directly connected to the religious character, community structure, or mission of the institution (for example, gender-specific accommodations within monastic communities, clergy-only residences, or retreat programs limited to certain participant categories), provided such criteria are clearly disclosed in the listing and applied consistently and respectfully.
All admission criteria must comply with applicable laws and must not be used as a pretext for unlawful discrimination.
5.2 Accuracy and Transparency.
Hosts must ensure listings and communications accurately represent accommodations, services, and conditions.
5.3 Safety and Cleanliness.
Hosts must maintain safe, sanitary, and habitable facilities consistent with applicable regulations.
5.4 Confidentiality.
Hosts must keep Guest information confidential and use it only for legitimate booking and stay-related purposes.
5.5 Spiritual Environment.
Hosts may preserve their institution’s religious character and house rules, provided they are applied lawfully and consistently with Monkstays’ platform standards.
5.6 Cooperation.
Hosts must cooperate with verification, claims reviews, and compliance investigations when reasonably requested.
6. Organisational User Conduct
6.1 Applicability.
This section applies to entities managing multi-user accounts (e.g., dioceses, retreat networks, tour operators).
6.2 Responsibility.
The organisation is responsible for actions taken by its authorised users.
6.3 Staff Conduct.
Employees, contractors, or volunteers using the Platform under an organisation account must comply with this Code.
6.4 Data Protection.
Organisational Users must safeguard personal data and prevent unauthorised access to or disclosure of it.
6.5 Integrity of Access.
Organisations may not create unauthorised sub-accounts or share credentials with non-approved individuals.
7. Communication Standards
7.1 On-Platform Tools.
Users should use Monkstays’ on-platform tools for communications and record-keeping.
7.2 Respectful Interaction.
Messages must be courteous and free from coercion, offensive language, or harassment.
7.3 Prohibition of Spam.
Unsolicited advertising, promotional messages, or repeated solicitations are prohibited.
7.4 Language and Tone.
Users shall communicate respectfully and in a manner consistent with Monkstays’ mission.
8. Compliance and Reporting
8.1 Reporting.
Users may report violations or safety concerns to legal@monkstays.com.
8.2 Confidentiality.
Reports are handled confidentially and investigated with appropriate discretion.
8.3 No Retaliation.
Monkstays prohibits retaliation against any person who reports misconduct in good faith.
9. Enforcement and Sanctions
9.1 Discretionary Measures.
Depending on severity, Monkstays may:
(a) issue a warning;
(b) suspend or restrict access;
(c) cancel pending bookings;
(d) permanently close an account;
(e) report unlawful activity to authorities where appropriate.
9.2 Fees and Refunds.
Violations may result in loss of access and/or cancellation of services. Refunds of service fees are not guaranteed and will be handled in accordance with Monkstays’ policies and applicable law.
9.3 Reinstatement.
Monkstays may reinstate Users at its discretion where compliance and good faith commitment are demonstrated.
10. Final Provisions
10.1 Integration.
This Code forms part of Monkstays’ Terms of Service and is enforceable as a condition of Platform use.
10.2 Modifications.
Monkstays may update this Code with reasonable notice by posting an updated version on the Platform.
10.3 Governing Law.
This Code is governed by the laws of Québec and the applicable federal laws of Canada.
10.4 Language.
If translations conflict, the English version prevails.
